Excursion to Pisa: Exploring the Iconic Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli
November 24, 2023
On November 23rd, I boarded a train in Rome, making my way to Civitavecchia to meet the Enchanted Princess cruise ship. While I had hoped to relax on the first day at sea, my plans quickly changed. By 8 a.m., I was ready to embark on an excursion to the historic city of Pisa. The journey from the port in Livorno to Pisa was a short and scenic bus ride, taking us straight to one of Italy's most famous landmarks.
Cruise excursions offer a different experience compared to independent travel. With the logistics handled for you—bus, tickets, and a knowledgeable guide—there’s little more to do than show up and enjoy the ride. This convenience allowed me to fully immerse myself in the wonders of Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli, one of Italy's most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The white stone of the buildings in this remarkable square immediately caught my attention. The Pisa Baptistery, the Pisa Cathedral, and the world-renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa (officially known as the Campanile) create a breathtaking sight. The Leaning Tower, an architectural marvel dating back to the 12th century, is famously tilted due to unstable foundation soil. Initially designed as a freestanding bell tower, it now draws millions of visitors annually, eager to witness this iconic structure and learn about its fascinating history.
As I stood in the shadow of the Leaning Tower, I reflected on the centuries of history that had unfolded here—this square has been a center of religious and civic life for over 800 years. The Baptistery, built in the 12th century, is renowned for its acoustics and impressive Romanesque architecture, while the Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is a masterpiece of medieval design.
