Florence - Day 1
Journey from Venice to Florence
November 18, 2023
My day began early as I checked out of my hotel and made my way to the train station for the journey to Florence.
Goodbye to Venice
Leaving Venice felt like departing in the stillness of the night, even though it was simply an early morning departure for my train to Florence. Wanting to avoid the risk of getting lost (which, as usual, is a real possibility for me), I allowed plenty of time for the walk to the station. This extra time turned out to be a gift, offering a chance to enjoy Venice’s tranquil beauty one last time.
As I strolled through its quiet streets in the soft glow of the early morning light, Venice seemed to be waking up around me. The city’s usual bustle was absent, replaced by a peaceful serenity that allowed me to soak in its charm before heading to my next destination.
My Room with a View: A Perfect Stay in Florence
Upon arriving in Florence, I effortlessly wheeled my large suitcase a few blocks to my charming bed and breakfast, located directly across from the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, better known as the Duomo. The view from my room was nothing short of breathtaking, with the cathedral’s stunning architecture framing the lively square below. The sounds of people gathering in the piazza added to the vibrant energy of the city, making it the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of Florence as I began to explore this new destination.
Brunelleschi's Dome
After checking into my hotel and enjoying a quick lunch, I set off on an unforgettable adventure: climbing to the top of Brunelleschi’s Dome. I’m happy to report that I made it to the summit and back down, an experience that’s as rewarding as it is awe-inspiring.
This architectural masterpiece, with its iconic red-tiled exterior, was constructed between 1420 and 1436. Designed by the brilliant Filippo Brunelleschi, the dome remains one of Florence’s most remarkable landmarks and a testament to Renaissance ingenuity.
Climbing the dome offers breathtaking views of Florence’s historic skyline, making it a must-do for any visitor. Be sure to add this to your itinerary when exploring the city!
Santa Maria del Fiore: Exploring the Cathedral and Crypt
After marveling at the panoramic views from the top of Brunelleschi’s Dome, I ventured inside Florence's magnificent Santa Maria del Fiore to fully experience the cathedral's grandeur. The intricate artwork, soaring ceilings, and spiritual ambiance make stepping inside just as captivating as admiring the exterior.
To round out my visit, I decided to explore the crypt beneath the cathedral. This often-overlooked area provides a fascinating glimpse into Florence's layered history, housing archaeological remains and the tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi himself.
The most unexpected discovery? A souvenir stand selling shot glasses right next to the crypts—a surreal juxtaposition that added an odd twist to an otherwise profound experience.
Opera del Duomo Museum: A Treasure Trove of Renaissance Art
To preserve its priceless sculptures from the wear of time and weather, Florence relocated many of the original works from the Cathedral and Bell Tower to the Opera del Duomo Museum. This extraordinary museum is home to masterpieces created by some of history’s greatest artists, including those who inspired the names of the Ninja Turtles - Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael.
Here, you can admire these iconic works up close, including Ghiberti's original Gates of Paradise and Michelangelo’s unfinished Pietà. The museum offers a unique perspective on Florence’s architectural and artistic legacy.
Saturday Night in Florence: Embracing the Holiday Magic
On Saturday night, I set out to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Florence after dark. The city was already buzzing with festive cheer, adorned with stunning Christmas decorations that lit up the streets. As I wandered through the historic center, I stumbled upon a lively Christmas Market, where the scents of roasted chestnuts filled the air, adding to the seasonal magic. It was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable evening.
