Rome - Day 3
Day Three in Rome: A Morning at the Colosseum
November 22, 2023
After a couple of busy days exploring Rome, I allowed myself a slightly relaxed start before heading to the iconic Colosseum for my 11:15 a.m. entry. Still, my eagerness got the better of me—I left an hour earlier than necessary to ensure I wouldn’t miss this much-anticipated visit. The walk to the Colosseum took me along a different route from the day before when I ventured to the Vatican, offering a new perspective on the Eternal City’s vibrant streets and historical charm.
Exploring the Colosseum: History Comes Alive
The Colosseum, an architectural marvel and one of Rome’s most visited landmarks, was completed in 80 AD under Emperor Titus. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater, it could host over 50,000 spectators for gladiatorial battles, public spectacles, and even mock naval battles during its prime. Today, it stands as a testament to ancient Roman engineering and cultural grandeur.
Arriving an hour before my scheduled entry, I took the opportunity to stroll around the exterior, capturing photos of the imposing stone arches and marveling at its scale. It’s fascinating to watch the lively atmosphere outside—tour groups following guides waving flags, street performers entertaining crowds, and the buzz of visitors from around the world sharing in the awe of this ancient wonder.
The Roman Forum: A Walk Through History
Spanning an expansive area, the Roman Forum offers visitors an immersive journey into the heart of ancient Rome. Despite arriving well after noon, the sheer size of this historic site created a sense of tranquility as I wandered through its ruins. I spent hours exploring the remnants of temples, basilicas, and public spaces that once formed the center of Roman political, religious, and social life.
One visitor nearby poetically described the Forum as a “lasagna of history,” with each layer representing a different era of Roman civilization. From the Republic to the Empire, the Forum stands as a layered record of centuries past, showcasing the evolution of architecture and culture. As the evening set in, the soft light cast a magical glow on the ancient stones, making this already fascinating site even more captivating.
A Final Stroll Around the Colosseum
On my last day in Rome, I couldn’t resist taking one final lap around the Colosseum before heading back to my hotel. As I walked past its towering arches and weathered stone walls, I reflected on the centuries of history this iconic structure has witnessed. Once a stage for gladiatorial combat and grand Roman spectacles, the Colosseum now stands as a symbol of endurance and cultural heritage.
The evening light added a warm glow to the ancient amphitheater, creating the perfect farewell to my Roman adventure. Walking along its perimeter, I felt connected to the countless travelers, past and present, who have been captivated by this timeless landmark.
