Destination Devils Tower National Monument
Welcome to Wyoming: Our First Stop in the Cowboy State
April 30, 2025
We officially arrived in Wyoming, marking the farthest west I’ve ever driven! Thanks to the state’s high-speed limit of 80 miles per hour. Our first impression of Wyoming couldn’t have been better as the Wyoming Welcome Center was hands down one of the best visitor centers we’ve seen since we visited upstate New York.
The center offered plenty of photo opportunities, informative displays, and helpful advice on weather updates and road conditions. This is everything you could want when starting a road trip through the Wild West. It was a perfect introduction to all the scenic beauty and adventure that Wyoming travel has to offer.
Rainy Day at Devils Tower National Monument
What better way to experience Devils Tower National Monument than under a sky filled with thunder and falling rain? While most travelers hope for clear skies, we found the stormy weather added a dramatic and unforgettable atmosphere to our visit.
As the rain fell and the wind howled, we hiked the scenic trail around the base of Devils Tower, surrounded by mist and the sound of distant thunder. The conditions made the moment feel like it was written in a story.
Rising 1,267 feet from the rolling plains of northeastern Wyoming, Devils Tower is America’s first designated national monument. This striking butte, a geologic formation with steep sides and a flat summit, dominates the surrounding landscape for miles. For experienced climbers, Devils Tower offers routes to the summit (weather permitting). As for us, we strategically passed on the climb due to the rain... or at least, that’s our story and we’re sticking to it!
