One of the nice things about staying at a Bed and Breakfast is meeting people from around the World and sharing travel tips. A nice couple from Australia recommended visiting Grianan of Aileach which was right over the border in Donegal. Grianan of Aileach is a hilltop ring fort dating back to the sixth or seventh century that was restored in 1870. The architecture for the fort is fascinating and the fort afforded some spectacular views.
Malin Head is the furthest North you can travel in Ireland. This was a crisp day and I would drive for hours without seeing another person. The tourist buses did not travel this far North. Living through history could not have been easy where this rocky terrain meets the ocean. There were remnants of World War 2 lookout towers and EIRE signs to tell pilots of Irish neutrality during the war. I stopped several times for pictures and short hikes.
My final destination this day was the Westbrook House B&B in Buncrana. This nicely preserved home was run by a woman who reminded me of my grandmother in many ways. She made me breakfast the next morning and recommended some of the different places I could visit on my journeys. It was one heck of a breakfast with great company.
